About

Lee Ely is a Philadelphia-based artist working on figuring out what his “thing” is.

From a recent artist statement:

Past work, particularly for my solo shows in 2019 and 2020, had focused on imagery from dreams– loose teeth, misplaced trains and bridges, slightly nauseating color schemes. More recently, the images are abstract– shapes and gradients overlaid with text, as I try to work out exactly what I am trying to express. In and around this is work that is more illustrative, experiments in scaling or otherwise reproducing images, moments of reflecting on my experience as a trans person, and a lot of figure drawing.

I work mainly in paint marker or acrylic paint, but my preferred media is what is easily at hand. While some of my paintings are on store bought wood panels, the majority are on scrap packing materials.

I do not have an overall, cohesive vision of what my art “is.” I have a lot of threads I am pulling, a lot of ideas I am slowly exploring. Right now, my work is primarily about the process of having ideas and putting them on paper (or cardboard, or fabric, or whatever else is around).
